Today, the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA) sent an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney urging his government to take immediate action to address the devastating impact of federal steel tariff rate quotas on construction projects in Alberta and British Columbia.
These outdated policies are driving up costs by as much as 50%, stalling critical projects like hospitals, schools, transit lines, and water systems — and unfairly penalizing western Canadian builders and taxpayers while benefiting a small group of foreign-owned mills in central Canada.
In the letter, ICBA B.C. President Chris Gardner and ICBA Alberta President Mike Martens call for a regional exemption for western Canada to ensure that builders can access steel at fair market prices and keep vital infrastructure projects on time and on budget.
