Interesting article in the Financial Post this week suggesting that the much talked about skills shortage in Canada may in fact not exist.
In a series called Junk Science, writer Peter Shawn Taylor argues that “there is no convincing evidence a national skills gap exists; in fact the labour market has been much tighter in previous decades.”
Taylor points out that in tighter markets a solution always arose. “Canadians have repeatedly proven they can short it out by themselves in a year or less. Given the time lag for most federal initiatives (aside from ad buys, of course), this suggests Ottawa will never move fast enough to correct a skills crisis before it simply solves itself.”
As governments rush to solve the problem, the article raises some interesting points about whether there is actually a problem. Well worth a read on this important topic.
