There is a ton of incredible work going on in the men’s mental health space right now, and over the next few weeks, we will highlight some of these amazing efforts.
We can’t say enough good things about the work of HeadsUpGuys, a program of UBC. It all started with a survey in a doctor’s office, where male patients (anonymously) answered that they were having suicidal thoughts at a rate much higher than what they actually told the doctor they were there to see. This disconnect demanded a change in how men’s mental health was approached.
Their mandate is “to improve mental health literacy among men, reduce stigma, arm men (and their friends, families, and communities) with strategies for effective self-management, and support their uptake of mental health services,” and they are hitting it out of the park.
Their website includes a self-check, symptoms, resources, facts, stories, and connections to therapists. See https://headsupguys.org/ for more.
Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program is helping more than 100 companies and more than 10,000 construction professionals better understand mental health. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details.
