With Albertans already feeling the strain of increasing housing prices and rents, it’s more important than ever that we beef up the construction sector and build more homes. This requires more tradespeople and construction professionals, at a time when the workforce is aging rapidly and retirements are set to outstrip the current rate of recruitment, says the February 2024 edition of ICBA Alberta’s Construction Monitor, released today.
The report examines current construction job vacancies, apprenticeship trends, retirement age, and housing needs and concludes that the Canadian construction industry needs to boost training and recruitment by more than 25%. It also offers several solutions to meet that goal.
