’Tis the season for new year’s resolutions as we careen into 2024. Goal setting – especially after a period of self-reflection – is a helpful exercise, but for the sake of our mental health, we should keep a few principles in mind as we make our resolutions.
- Reasonable and realistic. It’s tough to turn something huge on a dime. It takes time, and often baby steps. So don’t let some early setbacks or failures derail you; instead, set goals that anticipate the difficulty of the change.
- Control your timeline. Losing 20 pounds is a great goal for many people – but the timeline needs to be achievable.
- Reset! If it doesn’t happen in January, there’s no reason you can’t recommit to a goal on Feb. 1st or 15th or any other time!
As for improving your mental health, you may want to consider some of these popular suggestions:
- Exercise more
- Meditate
- See a therapist
- Focus on spirituality
- Take a break from social media
