Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details.
We’ve all been there. A harsh word from a boss. A criticism from a client or colleague. Something – whether in our control or not – going wrong.
The heart pounds and it gets really warm, really fast. The stress begins to rise. And we have to respond professionally and kindly, even as our body and instinct may be taking us to some hostile feelings.
That’s where Emotional Intelligence comes in. Can we turn the tide on that negativity and respond in a better way? Our Toolbox Talk this week offers some suggestions on how:
- Take a step back when you feel like you might be reacting emotionally.
- If possible, take 60 seconds to take deep breaths to lower your heart rate and focus your mind.
- Don’t make any decisions right away – give yourself some time to think it through.
- Challenge your thoughts – what do you want to achieve? How do you best get there?
- Choose your response – after assessing your options.
This all takes work and self-discipline, and sometimes the immediate need to do something takes over. But if we can find the time and space to calm down, it usually pays off.
ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program is helping more than 75 companies and 7,000+ construction professionals better understand mental health. The program is free for ICBA members — see icba.ca/wellness.
